Great location and breakfast. We are still waiting for our refund!

Great location very popular hotel. Best breakfast we have had on a terrace overlooking the sea front. Historic furniture fittings so very ethic but a little more comfort in the rooms would be nice. 5 mins to the ferry to Tanzania.

Rather a dark room and no safe in your room but a locker system via reception. They charged us the 10.00 tourist tax which is the norm, but because they could not get a signal it went through twice. We are still chasing them for this small refund! It’s a genuine error but they have not been responsive.

Unique stay

The building of the hotel is very unique. The pool has a chilled vibe. Staff were very helpful.

The security safe in the room did not work. I also don't appreciate being presented menu in USD while the local currency is Shilling. I am not American, neither are they. But this is an issue across the entire island.

Overall, a good value.

Beautiful antiques throughout. Common areas very clean. Pool is clean and refreshing. Breakfast buffet is outstanding (omelette station, plenty of fresh fruits, tons of pastries, hot food changed daily, delicious coffee and spiced tea!). Restaurant is spotty (pasta mediocre, but grilled rock lobster was one of the best meals I've had in a while!). Beautiful view of harbor from restaurant. Great location. Easily accessible by taxi (not all hotels or guest houses are). Room was comfortable. A/C worked well. Two bottles of water delivered daily was a nice touch. In-room fridge.

Lots of water stains and mold in the bedroom and bathroom (but I think that's common in such a humid area). I paid for a room with a balcony, but the balcony was too small and crowded with furniture to enjoy -- no room to sit! No shower curtain, so bathroom floor got soaked. Although I had a lovely 4-night stay and ate dinner at the restaurant 3 of my 4 nights, I was asked to pay an extra $10/hour for a late checkout (for 3 hours after the 11:00 am checkout). The front desk clerk told me that the hotel was fully booked (not true -- I had just checked booking.com and had seen that rooms were available for that night)...I would understand if a late checkout was not possible because the hotel was fully booked, but then why would he have allowed a late checkout if I paid for it? I felt this was petty. I asked to speak to the manager -- who never came out of his adjacent office to speak with me. This left a bad taste...especially because there are no air-conditioned public spaces where I could sit and work. I had 20+ hours of traveling ahead of me and didn't want to be a sweaty mess. I would not recommend this hotel for business travelers. However, it is a good value.

Great place to stay with very nice location and really nice staff

Breakfast was very nice, the views from the balcony of the sea are fantastic and overall we had a brilliant time at the hotel. It was raining on one of the days but they gave us an umbrella and organised all our tours. We did spice tour, slave tour, prison island tour and stone town tour. All very much worth doing!

AC went in our room on 1 night which made it a little warm

Nice place to stay for a few nights

An authentic place with a labyrinth of corridors, stairs, patios and classic architecture typical of a stone city. Responsive and helpful staff who can solve your problems. Great sea view from the balcony.

Photos of different rooms are mixed together and when choosing a room you expect one thing, but get something slightly different

Was great, would recommend to anyone visiting stonetown.

Harbour View room was really nice, worth the extra money to get this room over the standard. The bed was comfy and large, the overall aesthetic of the hotel and room was historic and made it even better. Shower was large & had good shower head pressure. The hotel staff allowed me to have a late checkout which was nice as i had been on safari on the mainland for the previous week and needed some relaxing time. Breakfast was generous (Spanish omelette was well cooked) and was able to take my time overlooking the harbour. Location was great and close to the key places in the old town. Couldn't fault my stay here.

Excellent boutique hotel, full of character perfectly situated.

Lovely setting. Spacious rooms with lots of character. Good breakfast on pretty balcony. Helpful and friendly staff. Walking distance to all sights in the Old Town.

Wonderful

Fantastic location which was so close to all the major sightseeing locations in a very friendly city. The staff were excellent and very flexible helping us with early arrival, tips & fair priced tours. Fantastic that water was available as well as coffee making facilities and they spray the rooms afainst possible misquitos. Overall a great choice.

Everything was very good, the only edge on the downside was how cold the swimming pool water was in the courtyard.

One of the best accommodation options in Stone Town, without paying top dollar.

Beautiful building right on the sea front with great views over the harbour. The night market is only a couple of hundred metres away. The room was spacious and the bed comfy. We spent many hours on the balcony overlooking the ocean. Breakfast was tasty and the food plentiful. No alcohol sold on site, but there is a bar a short stroll away.

The esplanade can be a bit noisy, but Stone Town closes up early, so this is rarely a problem at night. Unfortunately, the lift was not working when we stayed, so we had to manage 64 steps to our floor. Those who don't like steps may wish to check with the property about the lift before booking.

Wonderful

The location was good, uniwue traditional Arabic design, sea view room and the tropical fruits at beakfast. Breakfast was in a balcony (in the open) with good sea view.

The room lights were very dim. No elevator. Upper part of the stairs was dark (no light or dim light). They have many staircases and it was confusing to find the right stairs to go to my room on the third floor. They need to put signs with arrows to help the guests take the rights stairs to find their rooms. They need to adjust the shower as it splashes water all over the place.

Wonderful

When checking out, after paying we asked for our invoice. We were told we would have to come back later. We went out for the day and returned in the afternoon, and had to ask again, all the way up to a manager, and finally received it after about 10 minutes waiting.
